HOW ARE STARS NAMED?
Tonight's spacepost is about star catalogs and naming! Despite what some sleazy companies would like you to think, you can't just pay $50 to get a star named whatever you want.
Naming stars has a long history, and every culture assigned their own; nowadays, star names are standardized by the IAU, the International Astronomical Union.
Most bright/conspicuous stars in the sky have a proper name, like Deneb, Betelgeuse, or Achernar. These are almost invariably Arabic names.

'nother little resource for learning about indigenous peoples of north america.
most maps that show where indigenous groups lived pre-contact are painfully incomplete, if not inaccurate, but this one is pretty damn good! i've seen few maps which show even one of my tribes, much less both!
