Moana's frustration at trying to stop yearning for the horizon mirrors the cycle of trying to bury ones gender only to have it keep coming back and hurting us again
[security guards appear from backstage]
She lives her life according to the ideals of her rather who teaches her that it's impossible to shape her genetic legacy!
[actively being dragged offstage] SHE DISCOVERS THAT THE SYSTEM THAT KEPT HER TRAPPED WAS A LIE THANKS TO OLDER WOMEN ROLE MODELS WHO SAY HER HEART DETERMINES WHO SHE IS
@AzureHusky But even just beyond the general themes of non-conforming and breaking out of the system:
- She struggles and quickly finds that her support structure barely exists immediately after breaking out of the system.
- Her "I'm not a princess" conversation with Maui
- Maui is a gatekeeper that she eventually wins over, but it's struggle.
- Overcoming Te-Ka relies on her seeing past another's harsh and closed off exterior as a result of abuse to show their hidden beauty.
@sylverfyre oh yeah I joke about a ted talk but I have feelings on the movie as a whole along this line
@AzureHusky Me toooooooooooo (as if you havent noticed.)
*starts organizing a riot against the security guards who pulled her off stage*
@aggrobadger its my favourite sincere Disney movie
(The caveat "sincere" is because Emperors New Groove is its own thing kinda)
